The Alliance Secretariat, Fair Trade Tourism announced on Saturday evening, 11 May 2013, at its annual Indaba awards and networking function, its plans to become an international certification programme. Expansion will begin in the southern African region, kicking off with a pilot project in Madagascar, which will be launched in early June 2013 in Antananariva.
FTT’s certification standard has been revised to allow for regionalisation and country specific criteria developed for Madagascar. In addition, FTT has announced the appointment of contracted auditors FLO-Cert, who already have a “footprint” throughout Africa. FLO-Cert’s South African and Madagascar auditors have been trained and are ready to take the next step in the piloting of the revised system.
FTT’s Quality Management System now provides for the certification of tourism products (accommodation, attractions, activities, facilities, food services and volunteer programmes), the approval of travel retailers and wholesalers and the registration of tourism service providers (such as wheels and guides). Both the certification of tourism products and the approval of travel wholesalers will be piloted in Madagascar. The objective is that a Fair Trade Holiday to Madagascar will be available by early 2014.
FTT is excited to partner with Go To Madagascar in this ground-breaking initiative!
