TripAdvisor takes a survey on destinations children like to visit


TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, today shared findings from its ‘Trips with Children Survey 2014’. The survey was aimed at understanding the vacation planning preferences of families having children between the age group of 1 to 18 years. Along with the findings, a list of Top 10 Attractions to visit with children,across 7 categories was also revealed. The categories include: Cultural, Adventure, Museums, Landmarks, Outdoors, Amusement and Zoos.

48% of the respondents plan to take a trip with children in the next 3 months.

74% respondents specifically choose destinations or activities based on their potential for enhancing children’s knowledge and mental stimulation

Outdoors&Landmarks- top choice of attractions that parents plan to include in their next holiday with their children. Both polled 50% and 49% respectively

Top attractions across 7 categories:Cultural, Adventure, Museums, Landmarks, Outdoors, Amusement and Zoos announced.

Top 3 attractions in Delhi: Swaminarayan Akshardham, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib and Qutab Minar

According to Nikhil Ganju, Country Manager, TripAdvisor India, “According to the findings,holiday planning with children clearly involves keeping an eye out for destinations that help in enhancing the children’s knowledge, learning and overall intellectual development. It’s also interesting to note the significant role children play in planning a trip with an overwhelming 68% of parents consulting them while deciding on the destination.”

Key Trends from the Survey
Almost 1/3rd of the parents affected by‘peer pressure’ – 30% say their decision of the choice of destination/activities is affected by ‘peer pressure’ that their child faces in school/college

While planning their holiday:
63% parents take their children’s suggestions but the final decision is taken by them.
5% often or always end up doing things/going to places which are suggested by their children.
32% parents decide where to go/what to do, entirely on their own.

71% are unaffected by their children’s demand for a foreign holiday just because their friends were doing so with their parents. However, 29% said they would give in to their kids wish for a foreign holiday.

In the last one year – 76% respondents took holidays with their kids within India and 24% abroad

In the next one year – 65% respondents plan to take holidays with their kids within India and 35% abroad

Most preferred attractions/activities:
Outdoor (50%) and Landmarks (49%) are the most preferred activities that parents PLAN to include in their next holiday with kids. Amusement and Adventure polled 47% each, Cultural 39%, Zoos 33%, Museum 20% and Shopping 14%

Outdoor (51%) is on top of the list of the most preferred activities that parents WISH to include in their next holiday with kids. Amusement, Adventure and Landmarks polled 45% each, Cultural 33%, Zoos 36%, Museum 18% and Shopping 25%
