From 26-27 November, 2015, a very important event on sustainable tourism will take place in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain) on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Charter for Sustainable Tourism. The World Summit on Sustainable Tourism (ST+20) is organized by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and the Basque Tourism Agency (Basquetour), with the support of UNWTO and UNESCO and the main international organizations involved in sustainable tourism.
In 1995 the World Charter for Sustainable Tourism was adopted at the first World Conference on Sustainable Tourism, held on the island of Lanzarote (Spain). This historic action took place under the auspices of UNESCO, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the leading associated international organizations and programmes such as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the European Commission, the UNESCO MAB (Man and the Biosphere) Programme, the World Heritage Centre and the UN Division for Sustainable Development. Twenty years later, the ST+20 Summit will bring back together the main actors of sustainable tourism in order to debate on their future, to give a new meaning to the Charter for Sustainable Tourism and to create new alliances.
