We’d witnessed pristine beaches transformed into plastic graveyards and authentic cultural experiences reduced to tourist traps selling mass-produced “local” souvenirs.

But we’d also discovered hidden eco-lodges powered entirely by solar energy, like that magical resort in Fiji running on 100% solar power with its own water filtration system. We’d stayed in community-run backpackers in South Africa where profits went directly back to local villages. We’d experienced the controlled tourism approach in Bhutan that preserves both the environment and culture.

So we asked ourselves: what if we created a platform that could separate the genuine sustainability champions from the greenwashers? What if we could help both travelers and industry professionals navigate the complex world of responsible tourism? Thus, the Sustainable Tourism Alliance was born—though we admit there were significantly more coffee stains and late-night brainstorming sessions involved than this tidy narrative suggests.
